Midtown Enrichment Center
North Midtown‘s afterschool program, Midtown Enrichment Center (MEC) - was started during the onset of the 2001-2002 school year. It was organized to serve up to 50 students from Brown Elementary and Rowan Middle Schools which are located within the Midtown Community. Upon entry into the program, students are guided to understand the importance of school and the benefits of responsible behavior both school and at home.
It is our belief that all children should be encouraged and appropriately challenged in order to succeed academically to the best of their abilities. At MEC, we provide a structured program to support academic improvement, as well as guidance for making good choices and encouragement for responsible behavior.
The MEC Center has created a curriculum to support the benchmarks of Jackson Public Schools in the subjects of Reading, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Language Arts that are taught in the classroom. Our program uses a “hands on” approach to learning, using as many enrichment resources as possible. In addition to homework support, students also participate in various physical education activities, computer lab instruction, math and reading exercises.
Because our values are a part of whom we are, Midtown Enrichment Center (MEC) also supports the public schools in promoting strong character building skills and focus on values for responsible behaviors. Core traits taught are:

- Citizenship
- Responsibility
- Honesty
- Respect
- Conflict resolution
- Behavior modification
All of which are in line with the JPS traits for the current year.
MEC’s Motto:
“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6
